Playlist for Nov. 12 – Ska Dub Freakout!
Dub hit the scene only a few years after ska did, leaving very little crossover. Only a handful of original ska tunes were ever given the dub treatment. By the time of the 2nd wave, dub reggae was already well established in JA, and 2 Tone flirted with some dub techniques. It wasn’t until the late 90′s that the ska kids embraced dub whole hog. What started as just a few versions, tacked on to the end of various ska-jazz records, soon the 3rd wavers were putting out entire dub releases and adding dub fx to their live sound.
Nowadays, dub isn’t just an afterthought- adding echo, reverb and sfx to stripped down, pre-recorded tracks. Contemporary artists like The Drastics, Dub As a Weapon and Victor Rice have built dub into their approach to the music- composing songs in the dub style and performing it live on stage. Also new to the sound of dub is the genre mixing you’ve come to expect from the ska scene.
In this episode of Ska’s The Limit, you’ll hear Ska, Calypso, Latin-Jazz, Rocksteady, Punk and of course Reggae, all slathered with a thick greasy layer of Dub… Check it out for the next two weeks over at KDHX.org
