Playlist for Sept. 17, 2011

No JJ on the show this week, kids. Instead, you get something much better! Veteran DJ and reggae collector, St. Louis’ Soul Selector, Papa Ray lent his distinctive voice and vinyl selections to the big ska show. Ray’s gig at KDHX is focused on the Blues, R&B and Soul, but he’s got a passion for many eras of Jamaican music, as evidenced by all the classic Bluebeat and Rocksteady on this episode.

I’ll be back next week, but for now, please enjoy these traddy tunes from a man that loves his classic cuts. You’ve got 2 weeks to check out Papa Ray’s set, streaming from kdhx.org.

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on July 10, 2010

Hey kids!  Thanks for checking out another episode of Ska’s The Limit!

Last night was an odd mix of groovy rocksteady and early reggae with a heaping helping of fun 80′s ska.  What’s odd about that?  You tell me- how does The Boilers sound, following Lee Perry?  Is it odd to chase The Cimerons with Oingo Boingo?  You be the judge:

As always, this episode is archived and streaming over at KDHX.org, for the next two weeks.

Desmond Dekker & The Cherry Pies – King Of Ska – Trojan Ska Box Vol 2 – Trojan

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on October 18, 2009

Yes, it was a busy week- yes, I was lazy in my selection- yes, I was very sleepy with a sore belly-  but I make no apologies for last night’s show.  I played a bunch of “Commandments” style tunes, adding up to 39 commandments, all together. And just to fill in the gaps, I threw in a bunch of contemporary heavy-ska-hitters like Westbound Train, The Slackers, Pressure Cooker and The Aggrolites.

Speaking of The Aggrolites- how great was their show in STL?  I know that there weren’t a ton of people at the show, but those that were there were true Aggro fans- it was the best show I’ve been to in ages.

So here’s the playlist for last night’s Ska’s The Limit.  Be sure to click the links for lots of great videos and music.  As always, you can listen to archived episodes at KDHX.org

Thanks for listening!
