Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on August 16, 2009

Doing a ska show at 2AM makes me sleepy, but you know, I’m always wide awake by the time 4 o’clock rolls around.  What can I say?  I’m not just the DJ, I’m also a pretty big fan of the show.  Last night, I played some new stuff for Resolution 242 and Rebelation from Do The Dog Records.  We heard the birth of King Django’s chatter on the 80′s ska tune, Free South Africa from the very first US Ska Compilation, NY Beat Hit & Run.  I slipped a decidedly non-ska tune from the Void Union side project, The New Collisions, Parchutes on the Dance Floor.  Otherwise, pretty standard fare…  Check out the playlist below for some cool links, videos and downloads.  If you’d like to listen to this episode, click over to KDHX.org where Ska’s The Limit is archived.

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on July 12, 2009

Ska’s The Limit was strictly old school, last night.  If I wasn’t spinning Jamaican oldies like, 54-46, I’m in a Jam and Rudies All Around, you were hearing ASPO, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and The Impalers playing in an authentic fashion. Keep your ears up for King Django’s recent return to Ska in his nostalgic trip down Avenue A.

An added feature throughout, several modern artists who’ve taken a ride on classic JA riddims- Bitty McLean, Stephanie McKay, Dave Hillyard and most recently, Roger Rivas- all add their musical destinciveness to the beats you already love.  If you missed it, last nite, head on over to KDHX.or for the online version.

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on June 07, 2009

Arrrrgh!  What a frustrating show it was!  Computer glitches and a general lack of preparedness conspired to nearly derail the entire show.  Ironically, a big part of the show was dedicated to boastful DJ chatting.  While the show went smooth enough during the Open Season segment, where I played every track I could find in the Open Season DJ battle-  I proved to not be a “boss dj” as the show descended into chaos.   No matter, I learned a few lessons on not trusting my technology, and having backup music close-by.  Good thing I’ve never recorded a track- claiming to be the best.

Below, you’ll find last nite’s playlist with the usual links to explore… pay close attention to the links within the Open Season segment for a little bit of history on the matter.  You can also click here to hear the online stream of the episode, if you’re into the whole morose delectation thing.
