On Ska’s The Limit, last night, I sent out a massive 3 set tribute to Asian Man Records.  Asian Man is of course the ska-punk, DIY label, celebrating their 15 year anniversary this weekend.  Big respect to Mike Park, Asian Man, and of course, it’s forerunner, Dill.

Also on the plate last night- tons of new tracks from the likes of The Onedroppers, Beastie Boys, The Valkyrians, The Delirians, Hollie Cook, Kevin Batchelor and more-  and a small set of classic Jamaican funk and soul rounds off the night.

If you missed it, there’s still time!  For the next 2 weeks you can find this episode streaming from the KDHX archive.

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on July 05, 2009

It was a rainy 4th of July, and the streets were quiet, but if you were listening to KDHX, you heard a killer two hours of Ska and Reggae.  I started the show off with six tracks from the Asian Man catalog-  it’s hard to make a living running a completely DIY ska/punk record label, and I sent off my appriciation to the one, Mike Park.

As the show progressed, I dropped a lot of new stuff-  from Spain’s Liquidator records, a couple of cuts from La Famillia Torelli and Contratempo-  two brand new Aggrolites songs, covers in fact, from the Endless Bummer Soundtrack, Ghost Town and Pass the Dutchie-  brand new tunes from Rancid, Vic Ruggiero, The Titans and The Pepper Pots-  all this, plus classic hits from The Rhythm Rulers, Sublime, Clive Wilson, The Drastics and so much more.  Truely a mixed bag.  If you missed the show on Sat, you can always click over to the STL page at KDHX.org and listen to the archive.

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on May 31, 2009

My voice was back for this episode, which allowed me to talk too much, once again.  What was I talking about?  Well, all the new music, that’s what.  The first hour featured brand new tracks from, Maddie Ruthless, The Easy Star All-Stars, The Bosstones, Pama Intl, Predator Dub Assassins and Westbound Train.

Plus, I spent the entire second hour hashing out a few of the sub-styles of 3rd Wave Ska.   I started by showing off some late-80′s tracks that feature a somewhat cheesy “game-show” style of ska.  Then, I played a set featuring the Dill/Asian Man style of Ska Core.  Then, I wagged my finger at a few late-90′s Ska-Punkers that squandered their opportunity to put Ska on the map, before bringing it home with a few legit Ska-Punk acts. Finally, topping it off with St. Louis’ own, The Skalars.  This was by no means a comprehensive look at the 3rd Wave, but I feel that I succesfully connected some dots between America’s post-2Tone attempts, and the higher-profile, late-90′s tsunami.  You can listen to the whole episode here.
