Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on August 30, 2009

I love brand new music- and this past week, I got a ton of it.  Brand new tracks from Pama International, The Drastics, and Deals Gone Bad found there way into my possession and into your eager ear drums.  Inspired by the new DGB side, Quiet Keys (live), I followed up the new stuff with a couple sets of acoustic ska.   I laid down some espionage-themed ska and soul before easing into some classic 2 Tone and early-era reggae- then I closed everything up with some dubby and electro ska.  If this sounds like something you might be into, I wholeheartedly recommend listening to it over at The Ska’s The Limit Page at KDHX.org

And check out the playlist below- bursting with links and such:

Playlist for Ska’s the Limit on August 23, 2009

It wasn’t until after I had already picked out the songs for this episode that I realized, just how darned odd most of them are.  I was recently allowed access to Mr. Paul Stark’s massive ska collection, and I’d guess about 80% of this episode was drawn from there.  Sure, there still a fair share of the standard fare, like brand new tunes from The Green Room Rockers, The Pinstripes, The Drastics, Madness and Courtney John- but many of the songs are coming straight from the fringe’s of the late-80′s/early-90′s ska scene.  All-in-all, a fairly mixed bag of music that you’ve not likely heard before.

I also want to give a big shout out to Miss Maddie Ruthless for providing the introduction for episode.

Be sure to click over to KDHX.org to stream the show, where it will be available for two weeks.

Archival Footage of Operation Ivy live in St. Louis

Videos of Operation Ivy are hard to come by, and when you do find them, they are often muddy looking and rough sounding.  That’s the nature of the punk-rock-beast, I guess.  But I was blown away when this turned up while searching for a Common Rider video.  It’s good too- you can hear the music and see the band.

Five videos- the entire OPIV set from St. Louis in 1988.  Here’s just one part:
